The World of Emily English

Is It Possible to Ever Find So-Called Food Freedom?

As one of the current leading nutritionists, Emily English has the world enraptured with her balanced, filling and undeniably delicious recipes. With a BSc in Nutrition and a social media following of 2 million, she has quickly become one of the most influential female figures of this generation.

Her cookbooks “Live to Eat” and “So Good” has made her a 2x No1 Sunday Times best selling author, with her self-appointed title of a “Nutritionist Who Loves Food” (emilyenglish.com) helping positively reshape the outlook of nutritionists as professionals trying to help improve our relationships with food and ensure we properly fuel ourselves, rather than exaggerate the all too common demonisation of food and skinny culture society has battled for decades.

However, though it can be seen that she is battling “almond mothers” and the disturbing regularity of EDs – both diagnosed and undiagnosed – can it be argued that her high focus on hitting protein and fibre goals leads to a tightly controlled diet and obsessive thinking surrounding food, making it impossible to ever achieve so-called “food freedom”?

What’s more, a large proportion of her recipes include a wide range of rather atypical ingredients, such as ginger and garlic paste, deeming her recipes rather inaccessible to those on lower incomes. However, it is this demographic who are most often the target for tackling obesity and poor nutrition, both major problems in the UK. On the other hand, she is attempting to help those with less time for cooking – such as us uni students – by soon releasing her third cookbook “So Good Express”. The cookbook promises it be full of her typically moreish and nutritional recipes, but with fast cooking and prep time that work on busy weeknights.

To top off the accomplishments of this industry leader, Emily English’s staggering social media presence completes her impressive portfolio. With over 800k followers on TikTok and over 2 million on Instagram, @emthenutrtrionist is a hub of content ranging from recipes and restaurant reviews, to fashion edits with brands such as Karen Millen. Her promotion to eat out and enjoy discovering new foods adds to her presentation as a nutritionist who loves to eat and indulge, whilst also finding a balance with fitness and health.
